Handling Special Characters in Sitecore Search: Current Limitations and Challenges

I reached out to Sitecore to check if there’s a way to configure search functionality to handle special characters better. Specifically, I wanted to know if it’s possible to make the search return no results when a query contains only special characters, without needing to make any changes on the UI side.

Currently, Sitecore’s search doesn’t handle this situation well. If the search query has only special characters, the system doesn’t filter them out and ends up returning all results. I also noticed that Sitecore uses a predefined list of stop words in the analyzer, but it seems there’s no similar option for special characters.

After investigating, Sitecore confirmed that there’s no built-in functionality to address this issue. They said it’s not supported and would require additional customizations or workarounds outside the platform’s default behavior.

Since there’s no solution at the moment, I’ve decided to close the ticket. However, this could be something for Sitecore to consider improving in the future.
